What Is An ADU

WHAT IS AN ADU?

ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS

Granny flat, backyard home, carriage house, in-law unit, guest house, these are all different terms for an ADU. ADUs can be attached or detached from the main house and are a separate living unit complete with its own entrance, living, kitchen and sleeping areas.

THE ADU MOVEMENT

Given the low supply and high cost of housing throughout California, the state enacted legislation that promotes the construction of ADUs and requires cities to make it easier for homeowners to build ADUs on their property. ADU Homes is working hard to advance awareness and knowledge of ADUs and their long term benefits to owners and their communities alike.

  • WHY BUILD AN ADU?

ADU’s can serve different uses depending on one’s needs.
    • RENTAL INCOME - Utilize space for income

Owning a ADU, in-law unit or granny flat is an excellent source for additional income. Building an ADU in underutilized yard space can provide additional income and future capital appreciation.

    • ELDERLY PARENT - Be closer to family

Your new ADU can provide a home for an elderly parent, bringing them closer to family while still maintaining privacy.

    • YOUNG ADULT - Jump start your future

A new ADU can be the perfect way for a young adult to jump start their professional lives. An ADU  gives them their own space and an opportunity to save money for the future.

    • AGING IN PLACE - Housing for the future

An ADU designed to accommodate future housing needs allows homeowners to age comfortably in place. This frees up the front house to rent for retirement income or to move in family– true multi-generational housing with distinct private living spaces on the same property.

    • ADU GUEST HOUSE - Flexible space for visitors

A new ADU can serve as an ideal guest house for friends and family when visiting. When visitors are not staying with you it can serve as flexible space, a home office, or other uses.

    LIFE CYCLE

An ADU can change and adapt with you and your lifestyle. Your backyard rental could one day serve as a home for your parents, a place for your children to call home base, or your retirement home within your own community near family, friends, doctors and the community you love.
The versatility of an ADU is one of its greatest benefits.
